IPv6 Basic Knowledge
IPv6
- · 128 bits = 2128
- · 3.4 x 1038 combinations
- · Ex: 2001:ABCD:0000:0000:1236:ABC1:0000:ABCD
IPv6 has three different types of addresses:
- · Unicast
- · Multicast
- · Anycast
Rules for shrinking the IPv6
· Addresses are written in groups of 4 hex digits, separated by a single colon: 2001:0db8:0000:0000:0021:0000:4ab9:0300
· One or more groups of zeroes can be
replaced by two colons.
The address above becomes:
2001:0db8::0021:0000:4ab9:0300
· Only one group of zeroes can be
replaced with double colons.
However, leading zeroes in a group can also be omitted.
The address above becomes:
2001:db8::21:0:4ab9:300
